Cox Memorial Whimper Wonderland Run – Monday, January 1st, 2024.
CCMGC members, Tony and Judy Cox, loved to drive their blue 1962 MGA Mk ll with the top down. In fact, they very rarely put the roof up. More than ten years ago they came up with the idea that classic cars should have a drive on New Year’s Day. Initially this was an unofficial Club event, and members from the LAMB Club, and the Old English Car Club, were invited as Tony was also a member of those Clubs.
So, the event has, in addition to MGs and Jaguars, seen Triumphs, Morgans, Jensens, and Minis participate. Drivers are encouraged to drive with the top down, and this has resulted in some weird and wonderful headgear being employed to keep the brain from freezing. The event goes rain or shine, and even if there is frost in the trees. A hearty pub lunch is available to participants at the end of the one-hour run. The event has been cancelled only twice due to heavy snow on the roads.
This year’s event will start at around 11am from the Chevron Station, at 8th Avenue and 176th Street (Highway 15), in South Surrey. Drivers gather from about 10.30am to inspect the various hats worn, and there is a prize for the best hat, chosen by the organisers. There is also a prize for the winning couple at the motoring themed pub quiz. Unfortunately, Tony passed away about two years ago, and his wife Judy passed away earlier this year.
Preregistration is required to allow us to give a number to the pub, so please email Anne Tilbury on eeaytee@gmail.com, indicating make and model of your car, and the number of people for lunch. If you need more information, please contact Peter Tilbury on 604.889.5067, by text or phone call.
Why is it called the Whimper Wonderland Run? Because if you don’t drive with the roof down you are a whimp!
