Hi

Sadly another hurtle from Government.

As this is a Federal issue the NAACC is taking the lead, however the SVABC is assisting and promoting the letter writing program. If you are comfortable with it, talk to your MP, or send a copy of your letter.

As this affects Vehicle Enthusiasts as a whole, please spread the word.

NAACC Presidents Report … May 26, 2025

-Tariff Update-

The (NAACC) National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada is working on one of its biggest challenges ever. The Tariffs imposed on Canadian residents by the Canadian government has paralyzed the collector car hobby in Canada. Many transactions have been cancelled or have been put on hold. As of May 26, 2025 there is a 25% Tariff on all collector vehicles coming into Canada from the USA.

The USA is not imposing this 25% tariff on its US citizens. It appears that the Canadian Government is trying to make a statement. Sadly, this statement is hurting everyone in Canada who is purchasing a car in the USA. The Canadian Government has implemented a 25% tariff on all US vehicles coming into Canada, including the PST.  Basically, a tax on a tax! A vehicle being brought into Canada is taxed at 25%, the PST is calculated and then the Customs Tax is applied on the total. Never mind that the price of the vehicle in US dollars has to be converted to Canadian dollars first. The Customs Tax is then applied to the converted amount, including the PST. Over forty years ago, the NAACC lead the way to ‘duty free’ admission of collector vehicles and their related parts if they were 25 years old or older.

Today, we are again in negotiations with the Federal Government to make these very unfair Tariffs go away. Repeating myself, the USA has not imposed these taxes on vehicles going into the USA.

I urge you to write a letter to your (MP) Member of Parliament urging them to voice a strong opposition to this unjust Tarriff. I also urge you to write “The Right Honourable Mark Carney PC, M., Prime Minister of Canada”.

The collector hobby in Canada contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to both local charities and to the Canadian economy. As the guardians for preserving the history of collector vehicles we are asking the Canadian Federal Government to do the right thing and remove the restrictive 25% Tarriff on US vehicles and parts coming into Canada.

How do I write a letter to the government of Canada?

How do I address a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada?

To properly address a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada, please use the format: “The Right Honourable Mark Carney P.C., M.P., Prime Minister of Canada, Office of the Prime Minister, 80 Wellington Street, Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2”. In the salutation, you can use “Dear Prime Minister:” or simply “Prime Minister:”.

Be credible: Use formal grammar and punctuation. Type your letter if possible, using the appropriate format for a formal letter or print it out on your computer. (It has been my experience that you get a lot more understanding with honey as compared with vinegar😊)

Request a response: Courteously, ask for a response to your letter. Sign and date your letter: Date your letter and put your name and address on both the letter and the envelope.

Also, I would suggest that you email the Prime Minister as well. Please use the following format.

This is a great website that will help you send your message.

Sample Letter:

The Right Honourable Mark Carney P.C., M.P., Prime Minister of Canada, Office of the Prime Minister.

I am writing to urge that you drop the Canadian 25% Tariff on Collector Cars / Motorcycles and their related parts that are 25 years old or older. The USA does not have a 25% Tariff on collector vehicles going into the USA from Canada. Canada has never had a 25% Tariff before.

The Collector Car Hobby in Canada contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to the Canadian economy. The collector car hobby contributes tens of thousands of dollars to charity as well. I am asking for parity with the USA. Please remove the 25% Tariff and go back to what the Canadian Government has done for the past 50 years in regards to Collector vehicles entering into Canada.

Thank you,
